6 STAGES OF SELF DEFENSE


Deny the Opportunity, Change the Intent or Destroy the Ability


One-Time  - Do it once and forget about it (Deterrent & safeguard)

  • Install dead bolts and a peep hole
  • Use photo-cell initiated perimeter lighting
  • Consider installing a security system
  • Use only your last name and initials on mailboxes
  • Keep your car in good working order

Habits

  • Engage dead bolts
  • Turn on alarm
  • Close drapes
  • Never leave keys in the car
  • Use peep hole
  • Carry pepper spray
  • Have keys ready
  • Don’t admit that you are alone
  • Whenever possible, travel with a friend
  • Always lock you car doors after entering or leaving your car

Awareness

  • Always scan an area before approaching
  • Check the backseat before entering
  • Notice groups of people and their body language
  • Be aware of what is public and private
  • Notice where security cameras are

Positioning

  • Know where you don’t want to be
  • Moving toward safety rather than away from danger (Know where help may)
  • If you don’t see safe territory, pick the most public (Move to where he feels least safe)
  • Look for available weapons
  • Stay in well-lighted areas as much as possible
  • Park in well-lighted areas

Verbal Defense

  • A crime gets violent because he wants something
    • Is it something you can give and avoid the violence?
  • Remove the intent – dissuade (Convince him he doesn’t really want it)
  • Convince him violence won’t get him what he wants
  • Not passive - Not aggressive - Assertive
    • Solid stance - Hands out and down
    • Direct eye contact
  • Firm voice - Tell what you want to happen
  • Scream or whistle

What Not To Say

  • Do NOT challenge him
  • Do NOT insult him
  • Do NOT deny what is happening

Physical Defense

  • Weapon - Pepper spray, Kubotan, keys, anything
  • If one strategy doesn’t work, try another

Techniques

  • Face - Palm strike, Knuckle strike to the throat, Eye gouge with your fingers or thumbs
  • Knee – groin
  • Use your elbows – to the face or chest.  Any soft target
  • Grip release
    • One hand – twist toward the clutching thumb
    • Choke – duck under or spin
